Great Work: Allison Colpoys, book designer

I love this interview with Penguin book designer Allison Colpoys on The Design Files. Her work is lively and full of movement and texture and I love the splatter insert pages for her Wild Food book design. The pop of aqua with the deep purple is a surprisingly perfect combination!

I’ve been seeing her Amazing Face design all over the internet and it’s what made me take a second look at her other book designs. Each piece has her artistic painted and hand-illustrated flair. See more of her work on The Design Files and make sure to read her interview!

flipboard

If only I had an iPad to start using this app! I love that flipboard wants to make the web and especially our feeds read like magazines and print with an attention to type, space and photography. Read more about the flipboard and download it in the app store so that I can live vicariously through you.

Recycled Library Desk

How great is this recycled library desk?? It’s such a simple solution and so beautiful in the space at TU Delft Architecture Bibliotheek. Now the real question is, where did they get all the books from? Hmm….

The Book Cover Archive

The Book Cover Archive is full of stunning and clever book covers and has me very distracted in the wee hours of the morning. There is something so inspiring about book covers. I love that they have to be a quick read, yet tell a story but appeal on a shelf with hundreds of others, all while staying unique unto themselves. It’s a demanding job! The Book Cover Archive is a great resource if you’re stuck on your own book project or if you just enjoy them like I do. See more of them here.

Must Read: Rework

Rework, a book by the fantastic guys at 37Signals (also Basecamp, Campfire, Backpack and Highrise creators) is an incredible addition to my growing list of Must Reads. The book is filled with short chapters each with a great illustration like one the pictured above and a real life experience in each paragraph. They aren’t writers, per se, and they completely accept that. They are only experienced in success, and their stories, lessons and knowledge are profound and concise. They talk of their successes and failures and most of all, how to find success. I think it’s a great addition to any designer’s library and I’ll definitely be re-reading it before I start another book on my list. Buy a copy here and let me know what you think!

It’s Not How Good You Are & Think the Opposite

A pair of amazing books from Paul Arden that should be added to your must read list. My friend Rick Salsberry first introduced me to Paul’s first book It’s Not How Good You Are, But How Good You Want To Be and it changed so much of my perspective on learning and design. I loved this book so much that I researched and found more of his books, one being Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite. Both have inspired me more than I can describe and I put both on my Must Read list.

The Vandercook 100

The Vandercook 100 is a soon-to-be self-published book by Just Vandy, a small letterpress studio in California. Designers, practioners and lovers of the Vandercook 100 proofing press are contributing and I can’t wait to hear their own personal love affairs with the press. The book contains 100 stories as well as examples of the great work that comes from them and I’m sure enough metal and wood type to make you drool all over the open pages.

I’m so SO excited for this book! The Vandercook is what I learned letterpress on and I will forever love the amount of work I put in and the gorgeous pieces that came from the very worn and loved proofing press. Just Vandy is still accepting entries for the book, so if you own a Vandercook, a) I’m jealous and b) contribute and tell your story! I can’t wait to hear it.

Designers Don’t Read

Being stuck on a few flights and a few long bus rides, I’ve learned to pack a good book or two. On my most recent trip, I borrowed my friend Casey’s book, Designers Don’t Read, and all I can say is that I ordered it as soon as my plane hit the ground. A book comprised of Austin Howe’s essays and thoughts about design, each section is quick, to the point and completely powerful. Even though Howe isn’t a designer, his respect, knowledge and love for good, thought-provoking design pushes me to be better and ask for more as a creative and as a designer. Because designers don’t read, each section is labeled with the time it will take you to complete it, ranging from 0.5 minutes to 8.0 minutes, and the entire book will take you 3 hours and 1 minute. I highly recommend picking up a copy here and let me know what you think!
